Cheap explainer video generator: what one explainer costs on five tools
By the Voom team Published Updated 10 min read
A cheap explainer video generator turns a short written brief into a narrated, captioned explainer for the cost of one monthly plan. On 1 October 2026, one month without a watermark cost $29 on Voom, HeyGen or Synthesia, $49 on Powtoon and $99 on Vyond. Every one of them also has a free tier or trial with a watermark.
What makes an explainer video generator cheap?
An explainer video generator is cheap when the total you pay for one finished, watermark-free explainer is low, not when its monthly rate looks small. Three numbers decide it: the smallest bill a plan lets you pay, how many minutes that bill covers, and how many of your own hours the tool needs.
An explainer video is a short film that makes one idea, product or process easy to follow, usually with a voice-over and simple animated graphics. Generators differ in what they put on screen. Voom makes motion graphics: designed type, shapes, icons and charts. Powtoon and Vyond animate characters and scenes that you assemble, and HeyGen and Synthesia put an AI avatar, a digital presenter, in front of your script.
Explainer video generators compared: cost, time, voices, sizes and editing
We read each tool’s own pricing page (Powtoon, Vyond, HeyGen, Synthesia) and help centre on 1 October 2026, and Voom’s pricing page on 20 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars as those pages showed them. Prices change and can differ by country, so check the page before you buy. We did not time any tool, Voom included, so the time row describes the work you do rather than minutes.

Plan details come from the pricing pages; voices, sizes and editing come from each tool’s help centre, listed under Sources. Bottom line: for one watermark-free explainer, the smallest bill is $29, for one month of Voom, HeyGen or Synthesia. Powtoon and Vyond cost more for a month, but their editors make longer videos that you build yourself.
What does one explainer cost on each tool?
One month of a monthly plan is the smallest bill for a watermark-free explainer: $29 on Voom, HeyGen or Synthesia, $49 on Powtoon and $99 on Vyond. Yearly billing lowers the monthly rate but charges twelve months at once: $180 for Powtoon Lite ($15 × 12) and $699 for Vyond Starter.
What a month buys differs more than the price:
- Voom: a 45-second explainer uses 15 credits (8 credits plus 9 a minute of video, rounded up), about $0.67 at the Pro rate of $29 for 650 credits. Pro covers 43 such films a month (650 ÷ 15 ≈ 43.3), and if a video fails, every credit it held comes back (Voom pricing).
- HeyGen: Creator’s 600 credits cover about 19 minutes of Avatar IV video with a video look, which uses 31 credits a minute (600 ÷ 31), according to HeyGen’s help centre.
- Synthesia: Starter covers up to about 12 minutes of video a month, on top of a free allowance of 10 minutes.
- Powtoon and Vyond: the plans cap exports and downloads rather than minutes, so the real limit is the hours you spend building.
In minutes a month, Voom buys the most of the three $29 plans: Pro covers about 32 minutes as 45-second explainers (43 × 45 seconds), against about 19 on HeyGen Creator and about 12 on Synthesia Starter. The minutes also differ in what they contain. HeyGen and Synthesia put a presenter in front of your script, and Powtoon and Vyond give you an editor to build scenes yourself. Voom writes the script, designs a look for the topic, records the voice-over, animates every shot and writes an original score for each film.
How to make a cheap explainer video, step by step
These steps keep the cost down on any generator. The examples in steps 1 and 2 come from a hypothetical brief for an expenses app, written for this guide.
- Write the one idea in a sentence. The expenses app’s film would start from “a photo of a receipt becomes a filed expense”: one mechanism, not a list of features.
- Name the viewer and the tone. A few words do it, such as “Friendly and plain, for freelancers who do their own books.”
- Draft short on a free tier. Make a version of 30 seconds or less first. On Voom, the first video is free up to 30 seconds, with a faint Voom watermark that moves across the picture.
- Choose the size for where it will play. Use 16:9 for a website or YouTube and 9:16 for Reels or Shorts; our guide to social media video sizes lists each platform’s specs.
- Turn captions on. Viewers who scroll with the sound off still get the explanation.
- Check every fact before you publish. Read names, numbers and claims in the finished film against your source.
- Pay for one month only when the draft works. For a one-off explainer, a monthly plan costs less than a year paid up front.
On Voom, steps 1 and 2 are your prompt and steps 4 and 5 are settings; Voom writes, designs, voices, animates and scores the rest. Make an explainer video from a prompt: your first video, up to 30 seconds, is free.
What goes into a 45-second explainer?
A 45-second explainer has room for one question, one idea, a few steps on how it works and one reason it matters, closed by an end card. Voom’s studio plans it before it writes a word: 11 shots and about 38 seconds of voice, with a budget of 72 to 95 spoken words, depending on the mood.
How the budget is worked out. The studio’s own planning rule divides the length by 4.2 seconds per shot (45 ÷ 4.2 ≈ 10.7, so 11 shots). It keeps a breath of 0.6 seconds per shot and 0.5 seconds for the ending, which leaves 37.9 seconds of voice. It then multiplies by the pace: 1.9 words a second for a calm or confident mood (72 words), 2.5 for an energetic one (95) and 2.2 for any other (83).
A hypothetical plan for the expenses app above, at a friendly pace, could share its 83 words like this:
| Beat | Shots | Words | What the shots do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question | 1 | 9 | Ask what the viewer already wonders, finished from the first frame |
| One idea | 1 | 9 | Answer it in one sentence |
| How it works | 6 | 48 | One step per shot, one short sentence each |
| Why it matters | 2 | 12 | The benefit, in the viewer’s own words |
| End card | 1 | 5 | The logo and one call-to-action line, for 2.5 to 3.5 seconds |
We wrote this plan for this guide; it shows how the budget can be shared, not a film Voom has made. For other lengths, the product video script template gives word budgets for 15, 30 and 60 seconds.
- The idea comes early. Voom’s first shot is a finished hook from its first frame, so the question is on screen at once and the answer follows in the next shot.
- The mechanism gets the most words. In this plan, 48 of the 83 words explain how it works, one short sentence per step.
- Each step gets a few seconds. A new shot comes about every 3 to 6 seconds of voice. Estimate: an 8-word step read at 2.2 words a second takes about 3.6 seconds (8 ÷ 2.2).
When is AI not the answer for an explainer?
Skip a generator when the explainer depends on something a brief cannot carry: a real person, a character with a personality, precise 3D, a click-by-click walkthrough or more length than the tool makes. Some of these rule out Voom only; others rule out every tool in the table.
- A person viewers should trust. A founder’s welcome, a clinician’s advice or a teacher’s lesson works best filmed with that person.
- Characters who act. A mascot with a personality needs an animator. If you want to animate characters yourself, Powtoon and Vyond both offer them.
- Detailed 3D. Exploded product views, machinery and anything that must be dimensionally exact need a 3D artist.
- Click-by-click software tutorials. Record your screen instead; Powtoon’s and Vyond’s plans include screen recording.
- Long lessons. Voom makes films of up to 90 seconds on Pro and 180 seconds on Business. For a 10-minute lesson, Powtoon, Vyond, HeyGen or Synthesia fit better.
- Claims that need sign-off. Medical, legal and financial explainers still need an expert to approve every line, whichever tool drafts them.
- A brand that does not exist yet. Design the identity first; a generator works best from a brand it can read.

Common mistakes when making an explainer on a budget
- Paying for a year to make one video. Powtoon Lite costs $49 for one month but $180 billed yearly. Fix: choose monthly billing for a one-off film.
- Counting a trial as a free video. Vyond’s trial makes up to three videos with a watermark and allows no downloads (Vyond Help Center). Fix: check what you can export before you build.
- Explaining three ideas in 45 seconds. Fix: one idea per film; in the plan above, more than half the words go to a single mechanism.
- Writing the prompt like a storyboard. Fix: name the subject, the viewer and the tone, and leave shots and colours to the tool.
- Publishing without watching. AI tools can get facts wrong. Fix: check names, numbers and claims in the finished film.
Which explainer video generator should you choose?
Choose by what the explainer must show, then by the smallest bill. For one idea designed and animated for you, Voom costs nothing for a first video of up to 30 seconds and $29 for a month of Pro. For a presenter reading your script, HeyGen and Synthesia start at $29 for a month. To build animated scenes yourself, Powtoon starts at $49 for a month and Vyond at $99.
If the film should announce something new rather than teach it, read how to make a product launch video. To see how a designed film goes from brief to render, read our guide to AI motion graphics.
With a product link, Voom also reads your site’s colours, fonts, copy, screenshots and logo; without one, it designs the look from the topic and the mood in your prompt. To make your own, turn a prompt into an explainer video.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, with limits. Voom's first video is free up to 30 seconds and needs no card; it carries a faint Voom watermark that moves across the picture. HeyGen's free plan makes 3 videos a month of up to 1 minute, Synthesia's free Basic plan 10 minutes a month, and Powtoon's free plan videos of up to 3 minutes at 720p, all with a watermark. Vyond's free trial allows no downloads.
Yes. Voom writes the script from your prompt and sizes it to the length, and Vyond Go generates a script and a video from a prompt, a script, a document or a web page. Put any line or fact that must appear into the prompt, then read the finished script against your source before you publish.
Of the five tools compared here, three cost $29 a month, and of those Voom's Pro plan buys the most minutes. HeyGen's Creator plan includes 600 credits a month for $29, enough for about 19 minutes of Avatar IV video at 31 credits a minute, and Synthesia's Starter plan covers about 12 minutes a month on top of 10 free minutes. Voom Pro buys about 38 minutes as one-minute films (650 ÷ 17 ≈ 38), or 32 minutes as 45-second explainers.
On most tools, yes. Powtoon, Vyond and Synthesia give you an editor with a timeline, and HeyGen's AI Studio sets timing from the script. Voom has no timeline: to change a finished film, you make a variation, a new draft in which you change the prompt, size, length or voice, and Voom makes a new film from it.
Long enough for one idea, and no longer. On Auto, Voom sets an explainer's length from its content, about 30 to 45 seconds, and never pads it; at 45 seconds, a friendly voice-over has a budget of 83 words. Plans set limits too: Voom's free video stops at 30 seconds, Pro films at 90 and Business films at 180, while Powtoon Lite allows 10 minutes and Vyond Starter 25.
